COURTSHIP DISPLAY (BIRDS OF PARADISE)
Tiia Kasurinen
Decked in their most beautiful and colourful plumage and patterns, a strange flock of birds of paradise execute a mysterious and amorous parade. Inspired by shows by drag kings, video games and club culture, Tiia Kasurinen invents an anthropomorphic courtship ritual to speak of the hierarchies of domination that abound as much in the animal as the human world.
Choreographer and performer, Tiia Kasurinen graduated from Stockholm University of the Arts in 2017. She is interested in themes of identity, gender, the gaze and pop culture, which she explores through theatrical make-up, visual transformation and movement. Drag queen in Vulcano (2017) or Dragging the Drag: Vulva T (2016), she has presented her work in Bulgaria at the One Dance festival and in Finland at the Zodiak-Centre for New Dance. In 2022, she received the DanceWEB grant for the international ImpulsTanz festival in Vienna, and the Finnish Cultural Foundation 2023-2024 grant.
